Why garden communities make sense
Lord Taylor of Goss Moor, a renowned housing and planning expert and former government advisor, outlined the benefits of building garden communities at our first Stakeholder Forum meeting held on Thursday 14 January 2021.
Lord Taylor asserts that garden communities give local authorities and stakeholders the opportunity to plan communities with schools, local shops, doctors’ surgeries, and leisure facilities – all within walking distance. This is less likely to happen with sequential developments – housing estates bolted on to our existing towns – that put a strain on existing infrastructure and facilities.

The key output of this exploration for the opportunity of a new garden community at Shapley Heath will be a library of place-making documents known as the Shapley Heath Prospectus. Together these documents will outline how the new Garden Community could be planned, as well as confirm whether this would be viable and deliverable.
The Prospectus will be underpinned by a rich and comprehensive evidence base, including several baseline surveys and strategy reports, collectively known as Technical Studies.
